Whooooo!

So, as some of you know, I've been having a little problem with early morning awakenings by some feathered friends. There is a woodpecker who comes to the bedroom window every morning around 8 am. If the pecking doesn't scare me half to death, the cat jumping into the blinds and knocking everything off the nightstand does! One morning after Jed got up to go to work at 4:30 am, I was trying to fall back asleep and I hear, "whoooooooo, whooooooo" every 20 seconds! Normally I would be excited to hear an owl, but outside my window at 4:30 am caused me to be a bit irritated. Finally, dawn came and he quit....just in time for Mr Woodpecker to come!!! ARGH! Needless to say, I was less than thrilled that morning.

Today, I let Izzy out to go potty and a few minutes later I went to let her back in...."Izzy! Izzy! Izzzzy!!!! Get in the house you cotton pickin dog!!!!"......nothing. Ugh! So, I go outside (it's cold!) to find the darn dog and she's nowhere to be found, but what I did find was one of my feathered friends! This time I was quite excited! So without further ado, I give you Mr. Owl!

He was in the top of the largest tree in our backyard. We were remarkably close to each other.

I'm almost certain he was a Great Horned Owl. He was quite large.

If you click on this picture, you can see his glowing eyes from the flash. I started getting a bit frightened at this point. Every time I would take a picture the flash would go off and he would stare me down. I was beginning to think he might attack me. Just as I thought I might head in the house, ANOTHER owl flew out of the pine tree that I was STANDING NEXT TO! toward my head and I fell to the ground and almost peed my pants....literally!!!!! It took me a few minutes to start breathing again, but then Mr Owl left his tree and I went searching for the dumb dog.....who I eventually found and who went running into the house with her stubby tail between her legs!

I hope to see my owl again sometime soon....just not at 4:30 am.....that goes for you too Mr Woodpecker!!!

this post made me laugh SO hard, because I can "hear" you telling the story.
It IS quite impressive though to see an owl - although, I'm sure I wouldn't want to hear one early in the morning OR have one dive-bomb towards me! Idaho's quite the state isn't it!?

The books say Great Horned owls are found in Idaho.

They like snakes so maybe you should keep him around.

Well, Laura, I have lived in Allegany County for 44 years now and can't remember ever seeing an owl. Not that I want one to wake me up at some unholy hour! I love the photos and the story!

We have something else in common now. I was dive-bombed by an owl once too while hunting coyotes!

Did you almost pee your pants as well?

Yes I did because it was pitch black out and this giant bird came swooping at us!
